Author/s:

Cynthia A. Babas
Henry G. Gadiano

Welcome to a world of ideas, opportunities, and challenges in this new worktext, English, Basics and Beyond — Integrated Reading and Language, Second Edition.
This book aims to develop competence in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and viewing in a single learning tool, integrating the essential concepts and skills of two major areas – Reading and Language. The integrative approach is aligned with the competencies provided for in the K to 12 Basic Education Program developed by the Department of Education. Organized in four units to concur with the four grading periods in a school year, the lessons in each unit follow a definite format. Every lesson begins with a reading selection, which is any of the various literary types: story, folktale, verse, poem, essay, playlet, dialogue, or even a comic strip. The selections enhance faith and trust in God, love of country, concern and care for the environment, love for fellow human beings, health and safety, and other worthy themes. The goals in Reading can be clustered into major groups of skills: vocabulary skills and phonological awareness, comprehension skills, study skills, viewing and writing, and literary appreciation skills. The learners engage in interactive learning with the use of the computer, other technological devices, stimulating visuals, and graphic organizers. They get motivated with exercises linking English communication skills with other subject areas such as Health and Science, Math, Social Studies, Music, and Art. The grammar and usage portion, which is meaning-centered, is linked with the purposeful oral and written experiences previously developed in the lesson. A portion is focused on spelling to enable the pupils to learn and spell words they will use in doing written work. Every unit ends with a Unit Review conceived to measure the learners’ level of achievement. Hopefully, the varied concepts, skills, and values that may be developed in the pupils by this instructional device will help them become creative, innovative, and productive communicators as well as wholesome, responsible,

MAPEH1.JPG

GRADE 1 : MAPEH IN MY WORLD

Author/s:
Leopoldo F. Sumera, Jr.
Mariko Ishizuka Camacho, Ed.D.
Joanna Rose Tagle Burgos

Welcome to a world of ideas, opportunities, challenges, and artistic expression in this worktext, MAPEH in My World, second edition. This worktext has been designed to facilitate the integrated learning of the varied lessons in Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health in each of the six elementary education levels. The learning resources in the different areas are aligned with the competencies for MAPEH as provided in the curriculum of the K to 12 Basic Education Program, developed by the Department of Education (DepEd).
The Music portion of the instructional materials aims to nurture the learners’ artistic expression and cultural literacy through a variety of musical pieces – from the traditional and folk songs to the classical and modern music. All of these types of music made by a singing voice or through musical instruments will surely be appreciated by the young learners as “pleasing sounds” with tones that create harmony and follow a rhythmic pattern.
Conceived as equally important are the Art lessons which aim to enhance creative expression and art appreciation through drawing, printmaking, sculpture, crafts, painting, and other processes. The growing children will get familiar with varying art tools, as well as new art concepts and techniques, through an in-depth study of the Basic Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.
The Physical Education portion aims to contribute to the development of fitness and wellness and to improve all aspects of the learners’ personalities. The students are introduced to healthful Physical Education activities, such as body management, movement skills, dances, rhythm, games, and sports which not only develop their bodies and minds but also instill in them positive values of cooperation, self-discipline, determination, perseverance, and other valuable traits.
Health Education focuses on holistic health development and enables the learners to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to promote balanced nutrition, to prevent and control diseases and substance misuse and abuse, to reduce health related risk behaviours, and to nurture and care for the environment. All these will help maintain and improve personal, family, community, and environmental health.
In the light of the perceived values of the four interrelated fields, the learners are urged to participate actively in artistic and cultural performances, and demonstrate understanding and appreciation of the crucial roles played by Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health in their overall development — physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, and even spiritually. In so doing, they will contribute much to strengthening their respective families, and eventually, to improving society as a whole.

GRADE 1 : GROWING UP WITH MATH

Author/s:
Sylvia M. Castor
Erlinda B. Martin

The Fifth Edition of the Growing Up with Math series is developed to align its contents with the complete set of the Curriculum Guides of the K to12 Program. Aside from the alignment of the contents, the series remains true to the “concrete-conceptual approach” and the contents go beyond what is in the Curriculum Guides, which target the average students. Experiences from competitions have convinced us that Filipino students are intelligent and can learn much when well-motivated. The objectives of the series are as follows: learn to value and appreciate mathematics; develop confidence in the students’ own ability; become mathematical problem solvers; gain the skills to communicate and reason mathematically; and become lifelong learners. To achieve the objectives, the authors have carefully developed each topic with the use of concrete manipulatives and by addressing and involving the students. The aim is to ensure that the students understand each concept with the help of illustrations and examples based on their daily experiences at home, in school, and in the environment. Much care has been taken to develop the learners’ analytical and critical thinking skills which are much needed today and are among the most valued 21st century skills. To sharpen the minds of the students, we have given much emphasis on mental computation and estimation. With this, much time will be saved when we forego writing simple computations. Daily cooperative learning, according to the format developed by Dr. S. Kagan, an American educational psychologist, is encouraged to enable the students to learn together and by themselves, thus, making them become lifelong learners. Focus is placed on problem solving since the use of challenging problems may arouse the learners’ interest and enhance their higher-level thinking skills. Materials from daily life are utilized to show how functional the subject is. Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study-like applications and open-ended problems abound in each book of the series. As with previous editions, a Teacher’s Guide accompanies each worktext. In the Kinder to Grade 3 materials, lesson guides are included. In the upper grade levels, answers to all exercises are given and complete solutions to more difficult story and open-ended problems are presented to help teachers in the preparation of their lessons. The authors, editor, and publisher hope that this Fifth Edition will be met with equal enthusiasm, if not more, as the previous editions have been welcomed. It is further anticipated that this edition will be instrumental in developing greater interest in mathematics so that our achievement in this subject can be at par with those of other ASEAN nations, like Singapore and Vietnam. To all persons who helped the authors and editor in the development and production of this edition—teachers, administrators, and all FNB personnel—we extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation.

GRADE 2 : MAPEH IN MY WORLD

Author/s:
Leopoldo F.

Health Education focuses on holistic health development and enables the learners to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to promote balanced nutrition, to prevent and control diseases and substance misuse and abuse, to reduce healthrelated risk behaviors, and to nurture and care for the environment.

GRADE 2 : GROWING UP WITH MATH

Author/s:
Sylvia M. Castor
Erlinda B.

GRADE 3 : ENGLISH BASICS AND BEYOND

Author/s:
Cabrina H. Padilla
Elaine Mae V. Laruan-Hernandez

Hopefully, the varied concepts, skills, and values that may be developed in the pupils by this instructional device will help them become creative, innovative, and productive communicators as well as wholesome, responsible, and holistically developed Filipinos.

GRADE 4 : MAPEH IN MY WORLD

Author/s:
Ruby R. Natividad
Dennis R. Dator
Mark Christian S. Gallenito
Ivy Joy A. Capunitan

Health Education focuses on holistic health development and enables the learners to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to promote balanced nutrition, to prevent and control diseases and substance misuse and abuse, to reduce healthrelated risk behaviors, and to nurture and care for the environment.

GRADE 4 : GROWING UP WITH MATH

Author/s:
Karen Avillano-Tales
Rosemarie G. Hizon

GRADE 5 : CHRISTIAN LIFE EDUCATION SERIES
NEW LIFE IN THE SPIRIT THROUGH THE SACRAMENTS

Author/s:
Rebecca G. Cacho, Ed.D.

Dear Student, Shalom! This means peace and well-being be with you. Jesus always wants to see you happy and enjoy the life God has blessed you with. He makes sure that you never miss any opportunity to experience the immense love of God for you. If there is one Good News that we can be certain of, it is the truth that God is always with us — our faithful Friend whose loving presence is evident in our lives. The joy of knowing and experiencing the loving presence of God as a community of Christians is indeed worth reliving and celebrating. With your teacher and classmates, you rediscover God’s manifestation of gracious love as you study the meaning of the seven sacraments. Find joy in celebrating the gift of these sacraments because they are not mere rituals but are community feasts. They make alive God’s love in Jesus through the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit, we are inspired and strengthened to accept the call to become faithful disciples of Jesus. It is not enough to know our faith; we need to express it in our actions and prayers. This book helps us to do this as it invites us to reflect on how we may become children of God in the way we act and pray. Do the exercises alone or with your friends. Enjoy the opportunity to learn, experience, and practice the Gospel values celebrated in the sacraments. As you read the Human Stories and Faith Stories, be part of what is happening so that you may better relate to the lessons they convey. You may find that some stories are similar to your own life experiences. The stories will help you realize that the sacraments relate to our human experiences—our birth (Baptism); our growth to maturity (Confirmation); our need for friendship and community (Eucharist); our need for forgiveness for our failures and sin (Reconciliation); our call to commitment and mission (Marriage, Holy Orders); and our need for hope and healing in time of sickness and death (Annointing of the Sick). God’s signs of goodness are present in our entire life—from birth to death. Be happy, then, in proclaiming the Good News that you have received in Jesus through His Spirit. This is our mission as God’s children. Receive the offer of New Life in the Spirit through the Sacraments, because this is God’s offer of love and friendship to you. It is my prayer that you could see more clearly how God loves you through the sacraments. God be with you always!

GRADE 5 : ENGLISH BASICS AND BEYOND

Author/s:
Cynthia A. Babas
Henry G.

Hopefully, the varied concepts, skills, and values that may be developed in the pupils by this instructional device will help them become creative, innovative, and productive communicators as well as wholesome, responsible, and holistically developed Filipinos.

GRADE 6 : ENGLISH BASICS AND BEYOND

Author/s:
Bernardita O. Gonzalo
Ethel H. Estrella
Reybemart B. Camit
Graciella D.S. Dator

Hopefully, the varied concepts, skills, and values that may be developed in the pupils by this instructional device will help them become creative, innovative, and productive communicators as well as wholesome, responsible, and holistically developed Filipinos.

GRADE 6 : MAPEH IN MY WORLD

Author/s:
Ricardo R. Calubayan
Dennis R. Dator
Joycelin S. Sta. Ana
Ivy Joy A. Capunitan

Health Education focuses on holistic health development and enables the learners to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to promote balanced nutrition, to prevent and control diseases and substance misuse and abuse, to reduce healthrelated risk behaviors, and to nurture and care for the environment.

GRADE 6 : GROWING UP WITH MATH

Author/s:
Eugenia Vertucio-Guerra

Unang Yunit—Ang Heograpiya at mga Sinaunang Kabihasnan ng Daigdig;

English for Cultural Literacy, Grade Seven, is the response of FNB Educational, Inc. to the innovative approach to English teaching and learning in the grade seven level. The ECL Series revolves around the need to help the learners be aware of and demonstrate communicative competence in English through their knowledge of the literature of the Philippines and other text types for a deeper appreciation of our culture. In line with this aim, the varied lessons and activities for classroom teaching included in the worktext have been aligned with the program, grade, content, and performance standards, as well as with the learning competencies set forth by the Department of Education in the K to 12 Curriculum Program Guide. This instructional material contains selected award-winning literary pieces written by eminent Filipino authors in English. Each of the four (4) units includes selections belonging to the same genre – from narratives (such as folk tales – legends, fables, myths); epic narratives; and short stories; dramas/plays; poems; to essays. The units follow an orderly presentation by using relevant themes as unit titles. The titles are as follows:
Unit I – Expressing Attitudes Meaningfully
Unit II – Valuing Relationships with Self and Others
Unit III – Enjoying Poetry
Unit IV – Discovering the Filipino Identity
Every unit ends with the presentation of a class activity related to the genre studied. The students’ learning is measured through the use of a performance assessment activity such as:
Unit I (Narratives) – Storytelling;
Unit II (Dramas) –Drama Presentation;
Unit III (Poems) – Choral Reading/Speaking of a Poem;and
Unit IV (Essays) – Writing of a Reflective Personal Essay.
With the proper use of this worktext under the guidance of the teacher, the learners can improve their reading, listening, and viewing comprehension; as well as develop their vocabulary, literature, oral language and fluency, writing and composition, and grammar awareness. It is hoped that the students, equipped with the necessary communication skills, will continue to be motivated to read, study, and enjoy the integrated literature-based lessons in this ECL series. Eventually, aside from being competent in English communication, they may also nurture a genuine love for and pride in their own Filipino culture.

GRADE 7 : GROWING UP WITH MATH

Author/s:
Sr. Iluminada C. Coronel, F.M.M.

Growing Up with Math is the second in a series of mathematics books for Junior High School students. The series is aligned with the new Math Curriculum for the enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Program but goes beyond it. The new curriculum is of the integrated type and not according to discipline. The integrated approach allows the students to take the easier part of a discipline, like Geometry, in the first year and the harder sections in subsequent years when they are more intellectually mature. In addition, it allows for a review of the work of the previous years. The concrete-conceptual approach is used to enable the learners to understand mathematical concepts. Practical work and varying examples for each new topic are given for a better understanding of concepts and applications. Proficiency in problem solving, reasoning, and analytic and critical thinking are expected goals to be achieved by each book of the series. For this purpose, different heuristics in problem solving are presented at intervals in each book. There are exploratory or investigatory activities where appropriate. Problems are of different levels: immediate applications of learned procedures, principles or theorems, somewhat harder applications that may require the use of more than the principle just learned, and challenge problems usually marked by an “asterisk” before a number. One of the main aims of the enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Program is for the Filipino to be a lifelong learner. To achieve this, teachers are encouraged to motivate their students to do their homework and through cooperative learning work together to solve the challenge problems. Students should also be encouraged to develop their own strategies and do as much as they can mentally to sharpen their minds. The books in the series are developed in such a way that students will, hopefully, learn to value mathematics, become confident in their own ability, be problem solvers, learn to communicate and reason mathematically.

GRADE 7 : GROWING IN VALUES

Author/s:
Ma. Lutgarda G. Carlos, RBC, LPT
Myrna A. Abiog

Being and becoming human is part of the journey we take as persons situated in various contexts and formed in different backgrounds. To choose, prioritize, and highly prize something is never easy. At times, we may be caught in a dilemma of choosing between two important values in our lives. Life’s choices may not always be between black or white because there are times when we find grey areas that we need to face. Nonetheless, as grade seven students, you are being molded into persons of good character; dependable citizens of our country; responsible stewards of Earth; and loving children to your families, all of whom are living virtuous lives towards a better future. In this Values Education Series, we enjoin you to be active learners in our search for a better world. Each part of the lesson is designed to ensure that all of you will take part in understanding better how we should conduct ourselves in consideration of others in our community. Your teachers are your guides as you probe, critique, assess, and choose situations where your values are put to test. We hope that the activities provided in each topic will make you experience how enjoyable, challenging, and enriching it is to look closely at how we can grow in our values. Our dream is that you will have the opportunity to feel deeply and think wisely; then, decide and act on what you truly value in life. Each lesson is divided into different parts because we want you to have the rare chances to develop your skills for critical thinking, decision making, leadership, and communication. Many of the activities will help you learn how to work with others as you plan, execute, and assess your capacity to respond to many issues and concerns of the time. Instead of being reactive to situations, we hope that you will become proactive learners. At the end of each unit, we present to you the inspiring stories of real heroes from whom you can derive values to make you realize your own potential to be the best person you can ever be! Remember that beyond knowledge, wealth, honor, or prestige, it is the character of a person that truly matters. It is just like what the book The Little Prince reveals: “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

GRADE 9 : GROWING UP WITH MATH

Author/s:

GRADE 9 : GROWING IN VALUES

Author/s:
Myrna A.

GRADE 10 : KAMALAYSAYAN: SERYE SA ARALING PANLIPUNAN
MGA KONTEMPORARYONG ISYU SA PILIPINAS

Author/s:
Fe B. Mangahas

Unang Yunit—Ang Heograpiya at mga Sinaunang Kabihasnan ng Daigdig;
Ikalawang Yunit—Ang Daigdig sa Klasiko at Transisyon Tungo sa Panahong Medyibal;
Ikatlong Yunit—Ang Pag-usbong ng Makabagong Daigdig;

GRADE 10 : ENGLISH FOR CULTURAL LITERACY

Author/s:
Debra Jane S. Bozar
Mari Karen L. Gabinete

English for Cultural Literacy, Grade Ten, is the response of FNB Educational, Inc. to the innovative approach to English teaching and learning in the grade ten level. The ECL Series revolves around the need to help the learners be aware of and demonstrate communicative competence in English through their knowledge of literature of various acclaimed authors from different parts of the world, and interaction with different text types for a deeper appreciation of the global cultural diversity that we are all a part of. In line with this aim, the varied lessons and activities used for classroom teaching to be included in the worktext should be aligned with the program, grade, content, and performance standards, as well as with the learning competencies set forth by the Department of Education in the K to 12 Curriculum Program Guide. This instructional material is divided into four units covering the four types of literature, such as the short story, drama, poetry, and essay. Every unit contains selected award-winning literary pieces written by eminent authors.
Unit I (Short Story) – Short Stories: Window to Cultural Diversity
Unit II (Drama) – Drama for Personal Development: Creativity, Teamwork, and Leadership
Unit III (Poetry) – Poetry for Cultural Appreciation
Unit IV (Essay) – Essays for Social Awareness
With the proper use of this worktext under the guidance of the teacher, the learners can improve their reading, listening, and viewing comprehension; as well as develop their vocabulary, literature, oral language and fluency, writing and composition, and grammar awareness. Every unit ends with individual or class activities related to the genre studied. The students’ learning is measured through the use of a performance assessment device. The culminating activities are the following:
Unit I (Short Story) – Writing a Short Story Analysis;
Unit II (Drama) – Dramatizing a Scene from a Play;
Unit III (Poetry) – Retelling a Story through Digital Media; and
Unit IV (Essay) – Writing a Research Paper.
It is hoped that the students, equipped with the necessary communication skills, will continue to be motivated to read, study, and enjoy the integrated literature-based lessons in this ECL series. Eventually, aside from being competent in English communication, they may also nurture a genuine love for and pride in their own Filipino culture, and an awareness and a better understanding of this world’s diverse culture.
